    How to Use WorldCat

    WorldCatAccess WorldCat on or off campus to search for items in COM Library. Find thousands of books, eBooks and lots of Media items that were purchased specifically to support your classes at College of the Mainland. WorldCat will even provide APA and MLA style citations. 

       

      Save Time Before You Search with Boolean Operators

      Save Time!

      Boolean operators and other commands allow you to group, include, or exclude certain terms in your search or make your search more specific. You can use these operators to make your search more efficient and save yourself some time:


      Operator Description A search for... Will return...

      plus sign
      +

      The default search operator, so any search for terms without an operator will return items with all the words.

      guns germs steel
      guns + germs + steel

      results with all of the words entered in the search box: guns, germs, steel

      OR
      (uppercase only)
      | symbol

      The use of OR, or the | symbol, will search for either of the words listed in the search box.

      Paris OR fashion
      Paris | fashion

      results with any of the words entered in the search box:
      Paris
      OR
      fashion

      minus sign
      -

      The minus sign will exclude terms from your search.

      Paris - fashion

      results with Paris but not fashion
      quotation marks
      " "
      To search for an exact phrase, the search terms should be enclosed in quotation marks.

      “The Grapes of Wrath”

      results where all words are located directly next to each other in the search results
      parentheses
      ( )
      Use parentheses to create more precise searches.

      dog (walking OR feeding OR grooming)

      results with dog walking OR dog feeding OR dog grooming
      au: use au: in front of your search words/phrase to restrict results those that are by a specific author.

      au:shakespeare

      results where shakespeare is the author--items by rather than about shakespeare
      su: use su: in front of your search words/phrase to restrict results to results where your topic is a main subject of the item.

      su:shakespeare

      results where shakespeare is a subject--items about rather than by shakespeare
      ti: use ti: in front of your search words/phrase to retrieve results with the words/phrase in the title.

      ti:google

      results where google is in the title
       

      Save Time with Advanced Search

      Save Time!

      More often than not you will not need to use Advanced search, but it's available when you need it. Look for Advanced Search next to the Search button. A good time to use Advanced Search is when you want to restrict your search more than once, such as both a specific author and a specific subject.

      Restrictions in Advanced Search you can restrict your search by many option. These are just the most popular. Use the pull down menu by the search field to see each option:

      • keyword(same as regular search)
      • title
      • author
      • subject

      Limits in Advanced Search you can limit your search to:

      • library
      • year
      • audience
      • content
      • format
      • language
