How to Use HeritageQuest Online

HeritageQuest Online is designed for genealogy and family history research.

Books

The Books collection is made up of unique family and local history content spanning five centuries.

  • Digitized books from UMI Genealogy & Local History microfilm collection.
  • Over 28,000 books, including ~10,000 family histories and more than 13,000 local histories from the mid-1600s to the early 20th century.
  • Pages include plates of maps, sketches, photographs, etc.
  • Over 250 primary source documents including tax lists, city directories and probate records.

Search Tips

When person name searching you can enter:

  • Both surname and given name in a single search field OR
  • Several names combining them with Boolean operators

The Keyword field can be used to enter any type of term or phrase, including dates (e.g., banker, Cherokee, “womens suffrage,” 1885).

Truncation, Boolean and proximity operators:

  • AND, OR and AND NOT*
  • NEAR* will find all matches of two terms within 4 words of each other

Examples

AND: ((John Smith) AND (Mary Smith))

OR: ((John Smith) OR (Mary Smith))

AND NOT*: Lincoln AND NOT Nebraska

NEAR*: women NEAR suffrage
