Frankenstein and the Vampyre: A Dark and Stormy Night (52:15) On 16 June 1816, trapped inside a villa by insatiable thunderstorms erupting across Lake Geneva in Switzerland, Lord Byron challenged his party of young bohemians to a ghost story competition. That night, Byron’s challenge gave birth to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and Polidori’s The Vampyre, the first great vampire novel. Combining drama and a stellar cast of popular writers, including Neil Gaiman and Margaret Atwood, this documentary explores of one of the most significant moments in gothic history and its lasting effect on modern literature.
Jane Eyre (1:47:56) Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, one of the great romantic novels of the 19th century, has been filmed many times. Here, George C. Scott stars as the commanding and mysterious Mr. Rochester and Susannah York as the strong-willed orphan Jane Eyre. The film follows young Jane as she moves from her selfish aunt’s house to the repressive Lowood school and finally to Mr. Rochester’s estate, where she works as a governess before falling in love. Also starring Jean Marsh and Ian Bannen. Directed by Delbert Mann.
Nosferatu (81:00) This silent vampire film, a landmark of German Expressionism, is known for its fidelity to its source, Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. It is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential horror movies ever made. Directed by F. W. Murnau.
The Picture of Dorian Gray (1:50:28) In Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, a handsome young aristocrat descends into evil and debauchery under the influence of an intelligent friend with a cynical outlook on life. The corruption of Dorian Gray’s soul is represented by a portrait of him that grows uglier at the years pass, even as Dorian himself retains his perfect beauty. This 1945 film adaptation, shot mostly in black and white but with occasional bursts of Technicolor, is remarkably faithful to Wilde’s novel. It won the Oscar for Best Cinematography. Starring George Sanders, Hurd Hatfield, Donna Reed, Angela Lansbury, and Peter Lawford. Directed by Albert Lewin.
She(1:41:56) Description: This 1935 adaptation of H. Rider Haggard's greatest adventure novel features a group of explorers looking for the fabled fountain of youth. The travel through Arctic wastes before they find the lost civilization of Kor. Starring Helen Gahagan, Randolph Scott, Helen Mack, Nigel Bruce, and Gustav von Seyffertitz. Directed by Lansing C. Holden and Irving Pichel.
Wuthering Heights (59:36) Emily Brontë's famous gothic tale of passion on the moors of England is here given a lively adaptation, with a young Charlton Heston starring as Heathcliff. Directed by Paul Nickell.
