You can use the KIC scanner to scan chapters of a reserve textbook (no more than two per week because of copyright laws), or documents you need scanned. Then email them to yourself and use the computer lab to read, print or forward them.

Did you know the library has a few textbooks on reserve that students can check out and use in the library? Reserve textbooks are textbooks that teachers buy themselves and put on reserve with the library for students to use. These books cannot be taken out of the library, but can be used while studying or doing work within the library. Often, students will choose to use the KIC scanner to scan a chapter to themselves so they can continue studying from home.
Before you buy that textbook you need for class, swing by the library to see if we have yours. The library has what you need to succeed! Come see us today.

Even students that did not purchase their textbooks can get most of them online for free. Get the details and step by step instructions from the guide Textbooks for Your Courses—Online!
COM Library recently conducted a textbook survey to see where our students stand with being able to afford their textbooks, to see if they’d be willing to use Open educational resources (OER) alternatives and to find out what barriers, if any they might face using web based or online alternatives. The survey was a random sampling of 144 students in COM Library.
If you want to know more about OER try our Open Educational Resources (OER) for Faculty. While it’s aimed at faculty, anyone can use it to find out more about OER.
Almost 30% of students were not able to buy all their textbooks.
About 92% would be willing to use a free eBook or web based guide in lieu of a textbook.
86% face no barriers viewing a free eBooks or web based guide.
Of students that were not willing to use either a free eBook or free web based guide, there was little overlap, meaning most were willing to use one or the other. Only 3 students did not want to use either.
“A large-scale study at the University of Georgia has found that college students provided with free course materials at the beginning of a class get significantly better academic results than those that do not.”
