How to leverage AI in library databases to make your research easier.

AI Features in JSTOR

JSTOR has several AI features that can make your research easier, but you'll to have or create a free JSTOR account and be logged in to use them.

  • JSTOR AI Tool can help after you've used Semantic results to get the specific information you need to support our paper.

JSTOR Semantic results

JSTOR Semantic results can help you get more relevant sources for your paper,

It's very effective and available on the results screen after a search, just below the search box. On the results screen you can enter a natural language query, and then click on the Semantic results button to use the tool. If you don't like the Semantic results, you can toggle back to keyword results. 

  1. Log into our create your free JSTOR account. Make sure you accessed JSTOR through College of the Mainland so it knows you are an authorized user. 
  2. Enter your search in the search box. 
  3. Toggle to Semantic results. 

JSTOR's AI research tool with Semantic results

JSTORs AI Research Tool can help after you've used Semantic results to get the specific information you need to support your paper. It will automatically pop up after you've requested Semantic results from your search. 

The best way to use the tool is to ask a specific question that will support your thesis or argument in your paper. JSTOR's AI Research Tool will then point you to the key portions from documents on your result list that answer your question. There will be direct links to each of the relevant sources with page numbers so you can find that portion of the article or book. There will also be a brief summary. 

You can also use the tool when viewing most individual books or articles in JSTOR

FYI Currently the tool works with journal articles, book chapters, and research reports on JSTOR. It does not yet support images, audio, video, and text-based primary sources and some articles. 

  1. Ask the AI Research Tool a specific question 
  2. View the results in the AI Research Tool window.
  3. Get direct link to the article or book where the information was drawn from, including the page number so you can find it. 
  4. Scroll down the list for more results.
  5. Ask another question.

JSTOR's AI research tool with Individual Articles or Books

To use JSTOR's AI research tool with Individual articles or books, you must already be logged into JSTOR account. Here is how to get started: 

  1. Search as you normally would, by entering your topic in the search box. 
  2. Select the article or book that you are considering. For some articles or books, you may get the message Research tool not available. You can still use the article, but the AI research tool can't help you analyze it. This will generally be with older articles or books. You can limit dates on your result list to more recent articles if you like. 
  3. Once on the article or book page, the  AI research tool will generate a summary of the article. You can ask a questions, show an abstract, request related content or get recommendations for topics.
