How to leverage AI in library databases to make your research easier.

AI Features in ScienceDirect

ScienceDirect has AI features available that can make your research easier. All of these features are available under Reading Assistant. You can use Reading Assistant up to 5 articles per month. 

You'll to have or create a free ScienceDirect account and be logged in to use them. 

Getting Started with AI Reading Assistant Article Feature

To use Reading Assistant, you'll need to login to your free ScienceDirect account. Once logged in you can search for articles. Reading Assistant is available at the article/book level. 

When you first open an article in ScienceDirectReading Assistant will pop up in the upper left hand corner of the page. If you are one a small device, look in the lower right hand corner.

Once Reading Assistant pops up, you have 3 options:

  • Choose one of the example Questions you could ask
  • Summarize article
  • Summarize experiments

AI Reading Assistant Questions You Could Ask Option

In this example, the Question you could ask option was chosen, in this case, How does pH variation correlate with diatom community composition in different mire locations?

Once chosen or if you ask your own question, Reading Assistant:

  • States the question
  • Provides a brief analysis
  • Provides a direct link to the portion of the article where the point was made. Reading these links will provide a deeper understanding of your topic. 

AI Reading Assistant Summarize Option

The Reading Assistant Summarize the article option: 

  • Provides a brief analysis
  • Provides a direct link to the portion of the article where the point was made. 

Select the direct link to the portion of the article where the point was made. Reading these links will provide a deeper understanding of your topic. 

AI Reading Assistant Summarize Experiments Option

Select Summarize experiments to see each a summary for each experiment from article. The initial view will list the goal of each experiment, with an option to Show more to see details like methods, results and conclusions. 

Select Show more under any experiment summary to see the expanded view of an experiment.
