Japanese Americans Arrive at the Crystal City Internment Camp ca. 1940s (1:58)
After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, approximately 120,000 Japanese Americans were relocated to internment camps administered by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and the U.S. Department of Justice. The Crystal City facility in Texas was the largest one of these camps, with more than 3,300 residents at its peak in 1945. Although the U.S. government stressed that the detained Japanese Americans were well cared for, thousands of people lost their jobs and their homes, and had to suffer disruption and isolation in their otherwise normal lives.

John F. Kennedy Is Assassinated ca. 1963 (2:19)
On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. The shooter, Lee Harvey Oswald, was then assassinated two days later by Jack Ruby. Kennedy, a popular president who was considered by some to be the "brightest hope of the free world," served less than three years of his term. Despite the Warren Commission's findings that Oswald acted alone, there are a number of conspiracy theories about the motives and persons involved in the assassination. NASA Builds New Headquarters in Houston, Texas ca. 1963 (2:03)
Houston experienced a surge of development that corresponded to the growth of the petrochemical industry, as well as investment in the space program. Confidence from the booming wartime economy, combined with new technologies and credit opportunities encouraged the surge of economic expansion during the 1950s and 1960s.
