Check out these books that highlight African American artists from different eras, from the 1800s to the modern day. 

African American Art: Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights Era, and Beyond. This book includes 43 artists. Each artist has a brief biography and commentary on a selection of their works. 

African American Art and Artists covers artists from the 18th century to the present. There are a variety of art forms included in this book from paintings, and sculptures, to digital art. The editor has broken the book into different eras including cultural deprivation and slavery, emancipation and cultural dilemma, new Americanism and ethnic identity, social and political awareness, political and cultural awareness, and art before and into the new millennium.
