Black history month

Check out these books to learn more about African American history.

Stony the Road focuses on the backlash that freed slaves faced after emancipation and how it gave rise to the Jim Crow era in the United States.

The Color of the Law shows that racially biased laws did not end past the Jim Crow era. The book points out how current laws still support racial segregation.

Each of Four Hundred Souls' eighty chapters covers five years of African American history starting in 1619 and ending in 2019.

The 1619 Project looks at how African Americans have been a part of the American landscape since European arrived in Jamestown. This is a collection of essays and historical vignettes describing the impact of slavery on the country and how the changing views about African Americans have impacted the laws and customs.

Life Upon These Shores follows the history of African Americans from their arrival on the content to the election of Barack Obama in 2008. The images included in the book are maps, portraits, posters, cartoons, and documents.

Take a look at our African American History guide.
