September 12th is National Police Women's Day. Check out these books to learn more about the history of women in the police force.
Busting the Brass Ceiling: How a Heroic Female Cop Changed the Face of Policing by Fanchon Blake and Linden Gross. Blake joined the LAPD in 1948 and worked to rise in its ranks only to be stopped in her tracks because she was a woman. To fight back against this discrimination Blake sued the LAPD and the case made it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, where she won. Blake's victory expanded opportunities for women and racial minorities to join the LAPD and remove obstacles that blocked their promotions.
Policewomen Who Made History: Breaking Through the Ranks by Robert L. Snow. The book details the history of women in the police force. Snow uses a combination of research and interviews with policewomen to support his book. He focuses on the discrimination, sexism, and harassment that women face in the police force.
