Today is national dollar day, which commemorates the day Congress established the U.S. monetary system in 1786. The physical paper currency we are familiar with today was invented even before that in 1691.

In this book Goodwin unravels the history of America's monetary system, starting with gold and silver. He then delves into paper currency, from when it was printed by individual states to when it became federally printed. He also shows the influence that money had on shaping America's history.
