What is Modern Masculinity?

by Amie Corson on 2020-10-09T07:00:00-05:00 in Community, Films on Demand, Gender, Media, News & Media, Online 24/7, People, Social Sciences, Students | 0 Comments

A multi-part series on modern masculinity.  Guardian journalist Iman Amrani is exploring what masculinity means to men, aiming to hear from voices that are not often heard in mainstream discussions.

Why Jordan Peterson is Filling the Void (8:32)

Journalist Iman Amrani is speaking to men across the UK about the issues affecting men and boys in today’s society. In this episode, Iman asks, away from the polemic headlines, what is it about Jordan Peterson that has made him such a popular and influential voice for so many men?

Men Need Meaning & Responsibility (12:40)

After meeting Neil Smedley at Jordan Peterson’s 12 Rules for Life tour, the second episode takes Iman to Leeds to talk to Neil and his team at his King Koby chain of barbershops about male responsibility, purpose and meaning.

What Makes a Man (13:38)

Iman speaks with Channel 4 News presenter Jon Snow, grime artist D Double E, Status Quo’s Francis Rossi, musician MNEK, Love Island’s Jack Fowler and playwright Vinay Patel about the role models and influences that have made them the men they are.

Masculinity is Not What You See on TV (12:55)

In this episode, Iman hears from young men who are part of Football Beyond Borders, an organization that uses football as an engagement tool to support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Respect is a Two-Way Thing (14:50)

Iman speaks to men from A Band of Brothers, a charity that works with men in difficult situations, aiming to tackle the issues around disaffected young men. They discuss how community, class and intergenerational relationships have an impact on them.

Six-Packs, Success & Solitude: Men in the Media (12:27)

Iman looks at how images of men in advertising and the media may be negatively affecting how men see themselves. While campaigns targeted at women have changed hugely in the past 20 years – with campaigns such as Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty changing the images of beauty for women – men's adverts haven't had the same transformation. Iman speaks to those in the advertising industry who are working to change the way we see men in adverts. She also takes the conversation around aspiration and success to the streets of Bolton, and puts questions to pupils at Ladybridge high school.
