How to Format In-Text Citations

 

Select one of the three methods below to cite in-text references:

References in the text should be cited in one of three ways:

  • by an italic number
  • or by superscript number
  • or by author name and date

References should be numbered sequentially. If a reference is cited more than once, it does not receive a new number. If citing more than one reference at a time, include reference numbers in increasing order separated by commas.

Author name and year of publication

At the end of the cited information:
The primary structure of this enzyme has also been determined (Finnegan, 2004).


Within the cited information:
Finnegan states that the primary structure of this enzyme has also been determined (2004).

Italic numbers

At the end of the cited information:
Oscillation in the reaction of benzaldehyde with oxygen was reported previously (3).


Within the cited information:
Smith (3) states that oscillation in the reaction of benzaldehyde with oxygen was reported previously.

Superscript numbers

At the end of the cited information:
Oscillation in the reaction of benzaldehyde with oxygen was reported previously.³


Within the cited information:
Smith³ states that oscillation in the reaction of benzaldehyde with oxygen was reported previously.
