How to Vote in Texas, Step by Step

1. ""Register to Vote

Pick up a voter registration application at your local public library, any government office, or fill one out online. Mail your completed application to the Voter Registrar in your county. Upon acceptance, your voter registration will be effective 30 days from registration. Galveston County or Harris County voter registration contact information.

2. Find Your Polling Location

Check your local newspaper on the Saturday before the election for the address of the polling place for your precinct and, on election day, arrive there between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. to cast your ballot. Galveston County and Harris County polling locations. 

3. Bring Your ID

Unless you are a voter with a permanent exemption on your voter registration certificate, show your approved form of photo identification to the election official. Find out more about acceptable and supporting forms of ID

Acceptable Forms of Photo ID

  • Texas Driver License issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)
  • Texas Election Identification Certificate issued by DPS
  • Texas Personal Identification Card issued by DPS
  • Texas Handgun License issued by DPS
  • United States Military Identification Card containing the person’s photograph
  • United States Citizenship Certificate containing the person’s photograph
  • United States Passport (book or card)

Vote by Mail

If you qualify, you can apply for a mail in ballot through Galveston County, Harris County or Texas. In order to be counted, mail ballots must be received by the close of polls on Election Day.

Where to Vote On Election Day

Because this is a "countywide vote center election," if you are a registered voter in Galveston County, you are not required to go to a specific location on election day in order to cast your vote. All polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. through 7 p.m.

Voting FAQs

1. What ID do I need to vote?

Registered voters can vote with a voter registration card, driver’s license or any official photo ID, birth certificate, United States citizenship papers or passport, a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement or other official document that shows the name and address of the voter. 2. What if I'm a first time voter? 

If you are a first-time voter in Galveston County who registered to vote by mail and did not previously provide a copy of ID, you must show a form of ID other than a Voter Registration Certificate before voting. Find out about registering to vote in Texas.

3. What if I'm a student voting away from home?

If you’re attending a college or university away from home, you can vote early by mail if you claimed as your primary residence the address where you live while not attending school – in other words, where a parent or guardian lives.

To request that an early voting ballot be sent to the address where you are physically planning to be at election time (e.g.,at school), you must fill out an Application for a Ballot by Mail

4. Can I vote by mail? 
To vote by mail in Texas, you must: Be a registered voter in your county at least 30 days before election day. AND Meet at least one of the following conditions:

  • Vote by Mail Icon Be 65 or older by election day
  • OR Be out of the county for early voting and Election Day
  • OR Be disabled
  • OR Be confined to jail, but still eligible to vote
