Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell is a dystopian novel set in 1984 in Oceania, a totalitarian state at war. The protagonist, Winston Smith, works at the Ministry of Truth, altering historical records to fit the Party’s needs. Frustrated by the Party’s oppressive control, Winston starts a secret affair with Julia and becomes interested in the dissenting Brotherhood. However, they are caught by the Party’s spy, and sent for reeducation. The novel explores the manipulation of truth and facts in societies and warns against totalitarianism.
