Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, by American author Philip K. Dick, is an influential dystopian science fiction novel published in 1968. The story unfolds in a post-apocalyptic San Francisco, where Earth’s ecosystem has been severely damaged by a nuclear global war, resulting in the endangerment and extinction of most animal species. The protagonist, Rick Deckard, works as a bounty hunter who must “retire” six escaped androids that have come to Earth from Mars. As he pursues the androids, Rick begins to question the morality of his actions. He wonders whether androids, despite being artificial, possess a form of consciousness or humanity. The 1982 film adaptation, also influential in the field of science fiction, is known as Blade Runner.
