Children Who Lack Sleep May Have Detrimental Impact on Brain and Cognitive Development Elementary school-age children who get less than nine hours of sleep per night have significant differences in certain brain regions responsible for memory, intelligence and well-being compared to those who get the recommended nine to 12 hours of sleep per night, according to a new study led by University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) researchers. [...]differences correlated with greater mental health problems, like depression, anxiety, and impulsive behaviors, in those who lacked sleep. Funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the ABCD study is the largest long-term study of brain development and child health in the US.
Emotion or Evaluation: Cultural Differences in the Parental Socialization of Moral Judgement Moral reasoning develops rapidly in early childhood. Recent evidence from cognitive neuroscience literature suggests that the development of moral reasoning is supported by an integration of cognitive and affective components. However, the role of culture in the development of moral reasoning in young children is under-investigated. Previous cross-cultural research suggests that culture shapes how people interpret other’s behaviors. In particular, people raised in independent cultures, such as the U.S., tend to form impressions of others and attribute others’ behaviors to their personal dispositions more quickly than people raised in interdependent cultures, such as Japan. In the present cross-cultural study, we examined parents’ discourse with children in Japan and the U.S. Parents and their 3- to 4-year-old children were asked to view and discuss cartoon characters depicting prosocial and antisocial acts. Results indicated that in both cultures, parents discussed about moral actions (e.g., helping, harming) of characters. Furthermore, US parents were more likely to evaluate dispositional characteristics of characters based on their pro-social and ant-social acts, whereas Japanese parents were more likely to refer to emotion of the characters who got hurt. We discuss implications of cross-cultural differences and similarities in parental moral socialization and the development of moral reasoning in young children.
Food Insecurity and Child Development: A State-of-the-Art Review Converging research indicates that household food insecurity impedes children from reaching their full physical, cognitive, and psychosocial potential. This state-of-the-art review examines the last decade of research to: (1) describe the impact of the severity and persistence of food insecurity on child development; (2) use a socio-ecological framework to examine significant proximal and distal factors which may interplay; and (3) outline directions for future research. We conducted a systematic review of six databases of published papers from 2011 to June 2021. The search was limited to high-income countries and children aged from birth to 12 years. From 17,457 papers, 17 studies were included in the final review. Transitioning between food security and food insecurity had a significant and lasting effect on academic/cognitive function and behavior (i.e., externalizing), however less clear relationships were seen for psychosocial outcomes and other behaviors examined (i.e., internalizing). There was significant variation in the measurement and thresholds used to define both food insecurity and child development outcomes. Subsequently, comparisons across studies are difficult. Several future recommendations, including incorporation of socio-ecological factors, is provided. In conclusion, this review supports the link between food insecurity and sub-optimal child development; however, there is an imperative to improve and extend current understanding to ameliorate the causes of food insecurity.

Income-Related Gaps in Early Child Cognitive Development: Why Are They Larger in the United States Than in the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada?
Investigating the Influence of Childhood Emotional Maltreatment and Emotional Neglect on Sense of Coherence in Young Adulthood Child maltreatment contributes to numerous negative health and mental health outcomes. Previous research has emphasized that sense of coherence (SOC), which includes personal resources that promote stress management, is a potent construct shown to positively affect quality of life, psychological health, and symptoms of traumatic stress among trauma survivors. However, less is known about the effect of specific forms of child maltreatment and their relationship to SOC. The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship among specific types of child maltreatment and SOC and to determine the unique contribution of specific forms of child maltreatment on SOC in young adulthood. Results indicated that the most robust predictors of poorer SOC scores among young adults in this sample were severity of childhood emotional maltreatment and of emotional neglect, suggesting that participants who reported more severe childhood emotional maltreatment and emotional neglect reported fewer resources to manage stress. Implications for counseling practice and research are discussed.

Nowadays, compliance with the daily recommendations for physical activity only occurs through concerted efforts by entities that actively participate in children’s daily lives (i.e., schools, leisure time, among others) and that provide a set of spaces, equipment, and human resources that facilitate the practice of physical activity in these populations [13]. [...]the idea of the importance of educators and teachers from childhood seems to be cemented so that they can comply with the daily recommendations of physical activity, and more investigations on these topics are necessary. The structured development of children through physical activity is an emerging topic in contemporary society and therefore continues to need extensive investigation. [...]it is known that a child’s development is directly dependent on the motricity that judiciously modifies the nervous system [19]. [...]due to its contribution to quality of life, growth, and for health in general [4,8,13], physical activity is a component fundamental of a healthy lifestyle, constituting its promotion, a public health priority since childhood, and therefore, more research is still needed that reports emerging strategies on sport pedagogy and physical education practices for health.
