African American literature from the colonial period to the present provides insight into American race, class, and gender politics and intellectual thought. This literature has been shaped by slavery, Reconstruction, migration, social protest, war abroad, civil rights, integration, and the backlash to affirmative action. This essay focuses on African American literature from the eighteenth century to the present and identifies prevalent genres, themes, and political and social movements reflected in that literature.
